Is Zero Waste Living Doable?

Bamboo straws, paper bags, reusable shopping bags, stainless steel bottles. These are just some of the items that help reduce waste.  If you look up Instagram nowadays and check #zerowaste and #zerowasteliving you will see an array of these items. What we need to understand is that Zero waste living is not about being perfect and it is much more than mason jars and other tools.

Living a zero-waste lifestyle has exploded in recent years. Knowing how to recycle is no longer enough. Going zero waste is not a passing fad but a lifestyle that needs to be sustained and embraced. Imagine the benefits it will give to society and the Earth as a whole.

What is Zero Waste Living?

According to ZWIA, the definition of Zero Waste is:

“Zero Waste: The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.”

In simple terms, it is a movement to reduce what we need and reuse as much as we can until there is nothing to send to a landfill.

Now before deciding to explore the zero-waste lifestyle, you have to determine your WHY behind this change.

There are tons of ways to practice a Zero Waste lifestyle and to kick it off, here are the tips, from Zero Waste Home, writer, and activist Bea Johnson. These principles have become the rallying cry of zero wasters around the globe.

1. Refuse what you don’t need. This prevents unwanted items from coming into your home.

2. Reduce what you do use. This equals less waste overall.

3. Reuse whatever you can.

4. Recycle what you can’t refuse or reduce.

5. Rot what’s leftover. Composting food scraps, paper pieces, and wooden or bamboo toothbrushes returns nutrients and fiber back to the earth.

Going Zero Waste does not happen overnight. In this article, we will share with you some things that can help you get started.

Keep the 5Rs in Mind

Make the 5Rs mentioned earlier a Mantra in your everyday life. When you do recite this mantra, it motivates you to gain consistency in achieving the zero-waste lifestyle. Remember to “Refuse what you do not need. Reduce what you do need. Reuse what you consume. Recycle what you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse. And rot (compost) the rest ” (Bea Johnson)

Recycling Bin

This is a great starting point for you to practice recycling. You would need to check-in within your community which and what you can recycle and what you can and most of this is recycling plastics.

Learn to say No Sometimes and Reuse Important Stuff

When someone offers you something, think twice and ask yourself if you really need it. It is also great if you can carry your own containers whether if it’s for shopping, eating out, having your own set of containers and long-lasting ones. Glass and stainless-steel containers of all shapes and sizes, cloth bags and totes, mason jars, reusable straws and utensils, handkerchiefs and towels,  can be cleaned and reused over and over again, and easily transported. Now is the time to ditch the potentially toxic styrofoam piling up on our landfills.

Learn How To Fix and Limit Buying New Things

As much as possible, it is always great to wear something until it cannot be fixed anymore but as long as you can sew, fix and extend the life of a shoe or clothing, that contributes to your mission of living zero waste. Also, try to limit yourself shopping for new clothes and housewares. Checking out thrift stores and locally made cooperatives is a great way can be a great option for this.

Everyone’s zero waste journey will be different and won’t happen overnight. If you follow the tips mentioned you are well on your way to reducing and eliminating trash all over the world. Now the burning question remains: how close can you push yourself to get to ultimate zero trash.
